ANYTHING BUT MUTED MUUTO
"You will know our design because it has muutos. Objects made sublime through new perspectives, enjoyed across the world, representing the best of Scandinavian design today."
Honest to it's name, inspired by the Finnish word for new perspective, 'muutos', the Danish design brand Muuto aims to turn a new page in the golden era of Scandinavian design. The brand's hand picked designs, from independent creators who are strong interpreters of a shared ethos, showcase enticing aesthetics, strong functionality, exquisite craftsmanship and an honest expression.
Muuto's desire for everyday objects to express their own stories, and the pursuit for achieving a creative and collaborative design process, has shaped the outstanding furniture, lighting, textiles and clever home accessories that we see in the collection today.
The founders, Peter Bonnen and Kristian Byrge, did not train in design but followed their passion for architecture, which connected them with great product designers who still collaborate with them today. Part of the core ethos behind Muuto product design is often defined by three elements - basic, elaborate and inventive. As Byrge explains: "It's much like your wardrobe. You need basic black jeans and a white t-shirt and then one more elaborate, unique piece."
Currently being sold in over 100 stores globally, Muuto extends its notoriety worldwide, and we are extremely proud to announce that PAD is now an official retailer for the brand. We are live online with our first Muuto collection and will soon be showcasing a brand new set up in our Edinburgh studio to inspire you.
The Muuto Stacked Shelving System is a unique and contemporary design from Julien De Smedt. It provides a storage solution with endless possibilities. Using small clips you can arrange a series of boxes in various sizes and colours to quickly create shelving, media units, room dividers or even small side tables. A simple, yet genius, design that allows you to be creative and easily change configuration by playing around with the space between the modules or mounting them directly onto the wall. Here is a photo of Muuto Stacked used to stunning effect in a beautiful period property, showing the flexibility of its design for classical homes, as well as modern.
Here it has been used as a clever storage solution in a child's playroom. It's fun, stylish and creative - and, no doubt, a life saver for many a messy child's parents!
Another Muuto design icon is the E27 pendant. Designed by Mattias Stahlborn, an internationally successful architect and partner at the Stockholm-based architecture and design studio TAF. E27 features a striking naked bulb that plays with the subtle aesthetics and simplicity of industrial design. The pendant comes in 11 colour variations, which can be used as a single light source, or in pairs, rows or even clusters to create a modern, Scandinavian chandelier.
Introducing a new perspective on the coat hook is Muuto's much adored product, The Dots. Designed by Lars Tornoe, a highly credited designer having won multiple awards including Designer of the Year in Norway, each hook is produced from high quality wood with a silky smooth finish. The Dots can be arranged on the wall in exactly the pattern, colour and size combinations desired. Hugely versatile and not just for your coat, they can be used in multiple settings around the home for hanging any multitude of things.
