We all get a thrill from purchasing the item you've had your eye on for months. It creates a feeling of satisfaction and excitement. Our world is based around consumerism and we thrive on it. But what if that thrill was also about knowing what you're buying is having an immediate positive effect on the world around you?

This is what Cathelijne Lania, the founder of jewellery brand A Beautiful Story, has dedicated her work to, and we are so happy to have her SS16 collection at PAD.

For Cathelijne it all began in 2005 with a small silversmith factory in Kathmandu, Nepal. At the time she was working in the marketing department for coffee brand Douwe Egberts, in The Netherlands. With dreams of leaving her money-driven life to travel around the world, news reached her of a struggling silversmith factory owner called Dambar in Kathmandu, Nepal. He had 20 talented silversmith workers under his care who were creating stunning pieces of jewellery, but he was desperately looking for more customers to keep his business afloat.

It seems Cathelijne and Dambar were fated to find each other and after quitting her job and travelling to Nepal, A Beautiful Story was born. Together they created new designs and new products that could take them into new markets. Before long, through meeting the men in the factory, Cathelijne also met a group of aspiring women with a business called Beads for Life. Making intricate knitted jewellery, their goal was to achieve financial independence and so A Beautiful Story decided to sell their jewellery too, helping them to grow to employ 15 full time workers.

Today A Beautiful Story's jewellery collection includes silverware, beautiful gem stones and carefully crafted beadwork using a combination of old and new techniques. "Together with the artisans in Nepal and India, we design our jewellery collections. Every piece is a little treasure, made by hand and with lots of love. The gems we use each have a meaning, a secret purpose, showing you the gift of life."

To pick the first of many favorites from the collection at PAD is the Charlie Rose Quartz bracelet. The bracelet is brass gold plated with an intricate, hand stamped pattern and a delicate Rose Quartz gemstone drop pendant. A lovely piece on its own or stacked with other styles from the collection.

As well as being beautiful, the bracelet has a spiritual meaning too. The Rose Quartz stands for love and harmony and stimulates inner balance, speaking directly to the heart Chakra and dissolves any emotional wounds. It carries a soft feminine energy of compassion and peace, tenderness and healing, nourishment and comfort.

Another piece we love is the Famme Labradorite Necklace, featuring a gem stone which is believed to improve intuition and protect and attract success.

Lore of the Inuit people claim Labradorite fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis, an ordinary stone that transforms to the extraordinary, shimmering in a mystical light that separates the waking world from unseen realms.

With a fierce mantra for sustainability and equality, A Beautiful Story ensures a conscious and positive impact from producers to the consumer. With a focus on trade commerce, the producers develop a long term business relationship and their level of professionalism is raised. Pay is equal from man to woman, empowering women in the workplace in a heavily male dominated industry.

Once Cathelijne had retold the inquisitive and moving stories of her time in Nepal and the people she met, people began to invest and the company blossomed. As Ira Glass once said "Great stories happen to those who can tell them."

Feel the positivity that is emanated through this company, from bead to bangle, and invest in products which improve the lives of others and in turn, your own. Shop this wonderful collection at PAD, available both online and at our Edinburgh studio.
